Shibori:
 

Shibori, a Japanese word, comes from the verb shiboru, “to wring, squeeze, press.”  It is the term used by contemporary artists from around the world for the Japanese techniques of folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or wrapping and twisting cloth before it is dyed.  These shaped resist techniques date back to A.D. 749. 

 

Techniques include:

Folding – itajime – fold and clamping

Pole-wrapped – arashi “storm”

Stitching – mokume shibori – wood grain; karamatsu

Binding – hon hitta kanoko – dots with squares

 

 
Screen Printing:
 
Students use a variety of screen printing techniques to apply paint and thickened dye to fabrics.
 
Techniques include:
Photo emulsion
Deconstructed screen printing
Thermo fax screen
Paper stencils
Block Printing:


Using a wide variety of tools, students create pattern and texture to the surface of fabric using fabric paints and thickened dye.
